Sir:
On previous dates we have held only three telephone communications with your brothers AGUIRRE CEBERIO, GARRIDO BUENDÍA and OCHOA SALUD. No other communication comes from my brothers. We beg you to exercise prudent distrust regarding this means of transmitting messages, not accepting as valid any message that is not subsequently endorsed by postal confirmation with our seal. The rest of the calls come from brothers of yours whose names we keep to ourselves, as they are well known to you. We do not know the intimate reasons for their way of proceeding.
You can now understand some of the reasons for our informative abstention. If your own brothers introduce new elements of confusion into a subject which, for pertinent reasons, we ourselves already make strategically confused in self-defence, you will understand that we cannot wish to subject you to harmful states of anxious uncertainty. We sincerely believe that our contact with you is today truly disturbing to the fluid course of your simple lives. That is the reason why we seek a balanced situation that tries to reconcile the need to cut the -disturbing- ties that bind us to you while at the same time avoiding the state of disappointment and nostalgic sadness that such an abrupt inhibition would undoubtedly cause you.
We think, unless you are of the contrary opinion, that an effective formula would consist in seeking, in a disciplined way and in solidarity among yourselves, the way to become aware of the sterility of any attempt to copy our models of life, philosophy and science. To continue maintaining a gentle scepticism about the identity and plausibility of UMMO and to uproot as far as possible nostalgic evocations of past experiences.
We, on the other hand, will not cut off our information definitively. We will space it out, dosing it slowly at intervals of months. And we will confine ourselves to informing you about our Philosophy and UMMAAOO Culture.
We now wish to make some clarifications to you.
We cannot forbid you to circulate information about the texts we send you. We have always confined ourselves to warning you that, if this were done without our consent and at the same time such circulation harmed us, we would cut off the unilateral contacts. Today such harm has vanished. We run no danger. You may make use of that information as freely as before, but with your conscience, moreover, free from the fear of harming us. However, reflect that it is you, on the other hand, who may be harmed if you do not act with cautious prudence. We think that you violate the right to privacy if you publish without the authorisation of those concerned the names included in the typewritten texts we sent in their day to those brothers. You should also omit those judgements of ours which might wound the adverse ideas of other brothers, should they be printed in books. And in all cases it is prudent for the author of the book to show himself, in his prologue, distrustful of our testimonies and of the plausibility of the stay among us, if he does not wish other brothers, when he sanctions this possibility with his faith, to describe him as having his brain faculties disturbed.
You cannot in justice forbid, subject to the limitations pointed out, a brother who runs the risk inherent in this undertaking from publishing such writings.
Bear in mind, moreover, what the present situation of our stay on Earth is. By now we have amply covered ourselves against any risk that the Humanity of this solid star might be shaken by our presence. We have verified ad nauseam that there exist latent in you complex brain defences that prevent you socially from accepting such a disturbing thesis without spectacular and public proofs. They are the same braking mechanisms that prevent you from progressing with excessive acceleration. Perhaps your Social Network is dimensioned in this way, unlike ours, to prevent too rapid an ascent towards more advanced forms of life from leading you to a disaster of terrestrial dimensions. The distrust and scepticism that throb in the humans of Earth towards more progressive social forms, the lack of faith in the future, the fear of freedom, the clinging to outworn and old-fashioned ways of living, the desire for dependence on a master or a dictator, the unconscious fervour for order even at the cost of violating distributive justice, are so many factors of retrograde defence which offer the curious paradox of being immoral and aberrant when they constitute the life patterns of one of your brothers. That is why the best among you do not think so. The most intelligent among you abhor that mental way of understanding life, but these factors, accumulated in a society, defend it from excessive advances that would introduce catastrophic consequences if their course were accelerated.
That is why there is no danger of the authenticity of our existence being socially accepted. There is no risk in a few among the humans believing us, since however much enthusiasm they put into propagating our ideas, they will never achieve anything but the scornful smile or the conviction that one is dealing with madmen.
In case this were not enough, we have arranged our strategy (and we completed the task many months ago) so that, if someone more astute has some suspicion that our group is really powerful and possesses information difficult to explain with the logic of Earth, he will attribute our identity to a powerful State of the Earth. In this way they would explain to themselves how we came to possess reliable information about the atomic alert decreed by their president, which was given in its day to our friends in various countries.
No. Do not fear harming us. We have sufficient cunning and knowledge of the psyche of certain specialists to introduce a sufficient level of noise to disturb any intelligent conclusion that might damage us. It is you who must be careful. For if we have chosen as a mask a false identity corresponding to certain institutions of a powerful nation (and we have done so deliberately, choosing the one that uses the most repugnant means in the light of the morality of Earth), it is natural that the only ones who are aware that we are not “them” should feel perplexed and eager to clarify the truth. It is obvious that the weakest in this war of nerves are you.
But the Spanish group of our friends on Earth is precisely the one with the least protection: The most unprotected, for through our fault (my brothers in the first periods of their stay carried out sociological experiments which you came to know of in their day) it is the only one that made our contacts public in publications, reproductions and public meetings. Your brothers in Canada, England, Australia, Czechoslovakia and some other country have kept, thanks to their greater prudence and by following our advice with discipline, a reserve so hermetic that it frees them fully from such risks. You are already known to a considerable fraction of public opinion, and your names appear in the files of organisations that might one day trouble you. Do you now understand our anguished call for prudence?.. Do you now understand why we space out our written information so as not to complicate things for you excessively?
